About this study

Pulmonary rehabilitation is an exercise and education program that is recommended for people with certain chronic respiratory diseases, including pulmonary fibrosis.

Pulmonary rehabilitation classes often run over several weeks or months and can help patients to manage symptoms and cope with the effects of breathlessness on daily living activities. However, participation and completion of pulmonary rehabilitation often faces many different barriers.

The aim of this study is to design a financial incentive scheme to improve pulmonary rehabilitation referral, uptake and completion among people with chronic respiratory conditions and to design a study to investigate this scheme works.

What is involved?

During the study, the researchers will interview 16 people with chronic lung conditions, including those with pulmonary fibrosis, and 16 healthcare professionals and clinical commissioners to understand what is thought about using financial incentives to encourage participation in pulmonary rehabilitation. The interviews will be done online (e.g. a software programme like Zoom) or by telephone, depending on your preference, and will last 30-40 minutes. If you wish, your carer or family member can also attend the interview.

After the interviews, the research team will hold two online workshops, which will last two hours, to develop the financial incentive scheme. You have the option of putting your name forward to attend these workshops and the researchers will select two people to join the workshop.

After the first workshop, the researchers will hold a one-hour online meeting for people with lung conditions, and a separate one for healthcare professionals and clinical commissioners, to share what the financial incentive scheme may look like and to get your feedback. If you don’t use the Internet, the researchers will ask your opinion by telephone.

Can I take part?

You may be able to take part if you have a chronic lung condition, such as pulmonary fibrosis, and have access to the internet or a telephone.

In research studies, there are lots of different reasons why you may or may not be able to take part. These are known as inclusion and exclusion criteria (see list below). Only the research team will be able to fully determine whether you are able to take part in the study. You can withdraw at any point.

If you are not able to take part in this research study, there may be other opportunities for you to take part in different studies.

To find out more about other research opportunities visit our research finder main page.

You may be able to join this study if all of these apply:

Diagnosis of a chronic respiratory disease

You will not be able to join the study if any of the following applies:

Those who don't have access to either the internet or the telephone

What difference could taking part make?

Taking part in this study will help researchers to understand if a financial incentive scheme could improve pulmonary rehabilitation referral, uptake and completion among people with chronic respiratory conditions.
