Dad and daughter duo take to the skies

July 28, 2022

Dad & daughter duo Nick and Esmee took on the bold challenge of a skydive to raise over £2000 for Action Pulmonary Fibrosis in memory of their dad/grandad.

Nick

I watched my dad deteriorate from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). The suffering he faced at the hands of this debilitating disease can only be described as simply awful.

'My Dad’s fight sadly ended on Boxing Day 2020, surrounded by his family. I now want to raise awareness of IPF and support the brilliant work that the Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis charity do to help those who suffer and to raise money to find a cure for this cruel disease of unknown cause.

That is why I took on my lifelong fear of heights by jumping from a plane at 15000ft in the form of a tandem skydive on 23 July 22. The thought of actually going through with this challenge was petrifying beyond belief but was driven by the overwhelming desire for more sufferers of IPF being able to breath easy without round the clock oxygen canisters, and being unable to do the simple things in life like tying shoes laces, brushing teeth or simply eating a meal without gasping for breath.

I’m overwhelmed by the sense of achievement both personally for staring my worst fear in the face and secondly ticking the fundraising box for all that it stands for. No words can explain the thrill’

Esmee

I have seen the way this awful disease affected my grandad and how difficult any daily task became for him.

Therefore Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis need the funds to be able to help IPF sufferers, like my grandad, understand the disease, help the families of the patients and fund crucial research into a cure for this debilitating disease.

This is something I have wanted to accomplish for many years now, I know my grandad wouldn’t have been surprised that I’m doing this, but would be shocked that I’ve roped my dad into it too!

“It was such an unreal experience, nothing that’s even describable! You just feel so free and not even a worry crosses your mind for the whole dive!”

Nick’s 9 year old niece Megan also organised a cake stall sale at her school as she wanted to contribute to the fundraising for her Grandads charity and raised a fantastic sum of £224!

We are so grateful to fundraisers and supporters of Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis, without you we couldn’t support people affected by pulmonary fibrosis and work towards a better future to people living with lung scarring.
